Chalkstream fly fishing for brown trout on the River Kennet

Barton Court Estate

Barton Court Fly Fishing on the River Kennet

Barton Court sits on the main River Kennet, one of southern England’s most beautiful chalk streams, and also includes access to several smaller Kennet carriers, offering two contrasting styles of chalk-stream fly fishing.

If you’re searching for a mix of wild and stocked brown trout in a truly classic setting, Barton Court is the perfect destination. Anglers can book single-rod days or enjoy exclusive private fishing for up to six rods available every day except Mondays and Thursdays These days are for our group bookings up to 10 rods. Get in touch to find out dates.

Just outside Hungerford in West Berkshire, the estate is only a short journey from London via the M4, or you can take the train to Kintbury Station and walk straight to your beat — making it one of the most accessible options for fly fishing near London.

The picturesque fishing hut, positioned right on the riverbank, is the perfect base to pause for lunch, watch the Kennet glide past, and perhaps cook your freshly caught trout on the BBQ — the ideal way to end a memorable day’s fly fishing on the River Kennet.

The River Kennet: Mayfly Hatch & Fly Life

The River Kennet is renowned for having some of the finest mayfly hatches in the UK. Because its waters run slightly cooler than most other chalk streams, the mayfly hatch on the Kennet tends to start a little later — creating a longer and more sustained hatch throughout late spring and early summer.

The river is rich with fly life, with mayfly duns and spinners emerging throughout the day and into the evening. As the season progresses, terrestrial fly fishing can be excellent — beetles, ants, and hoppers provide superb surface sport in the late summer months.

Whether you’re an experienced angler chasing rising fish during the Kennet season, or a newcomer looking for a quintessential chalk-stream experience, Barton Court on the River Kennet delivers exceptional fishing in stunning surroundings.
