The Itchen is regarded as one of Englands finest chalkstreams. Anglers from all over the world are drawn to the river for the quality of its fly fishing. Its crystal clear water and abundant fly life make it one of the finest dry fly rivers in the country.
This iconic estate includes 2 ½ miles of prime chalkstream that provides excellent fly fishing for wild brown trout and grayling. The estate is mostly fished with dry fly only but a nymph may be used after June if the fish are staying close to the bottom.
Mayfly dates are now available and in high demand. So don't miss out on a chance to experience this iconic hatch
The upper beat consists of two parts of the river. The main river on the left and a smaller carrier on the right which is a lot wilder.
The main stretch allows for easier casting in areas and the ability to get a fly in the water without too many problems. This part of the river has a good amount of bank you can spend a good morning here and may not reach the top. This is also because it’s very important to take your time when fishing wild water like this. This main part of the river finishes at a footbridge at the top next to a house.
The carrier on the right of the upper beat requires much more experience. The river here is a little more narrow so stealth is particularly important. A smaller rod here is definitely useful, but you will need to be able to cast a long line to get your fly high up the river to not get too close to the fish. Long leaders and soft presentation are key.
This really is dreamy wild fishing conditions. The river can caterer for a maximum of 3 rods
The Lower beat at Fulling Mill has a great variety of water with lots to explore. The main river has access to both banks and also splits with an island at the top of the beat. This offers different angles and variation making a good change to approaching fish.
This offers left and right handed bank access which helps to cater for both parties.
The lower beat has a comfortable hut for lunch and a glass of wine in the shade. The river here is surrounded by water meadows which offer an abundance of fly life from aquatic to terrestrial entomology offering a great food source all season.
This beat has plenty of water to fish and keep two rods busy all day.
